So my friend's laptop got broken and now she plays Overwatch on her new Macpro through BootCamp. In the beginning to she would get 100 fps and never crash (on the standard low settings 75% render scale). Then after some time she experienced a major drop in frames. Right now she can consistently get 50-60fps, but sometimes when she turns she drops frames like crazy. Additionally, she crashes very frequently.
Like once every 15-20mins if she is lucky. This is a really bad experience for her since she loves this game and switched from paladins to overwatch because I recommended it. She even tried going back to paladins where she gets steady 80+fps and no crashes but decided overwatch with crappy fps and crashes is better.I recommended her to buy a desktop and she wants to, but obviously her parents are an obstacle since they say that she already has a laptop so she doesn't need a desktop. Maybe she will buy a desktop in the future, but not yet.So my question is. What is causing these drops in frames and crashes? And what can she do to fix these issues? Here are her Mac specs:She dedicated 70GB of memory to BootCamp and 180GB for the Mac.
Try logging thermal & fan status with benchmarking tools like cpu-z and gpu-z then update us again. I'm pretty sure it's thermal issue.
![Specs Specs](/uploads/1/2/7/5/127558371/825730194.jpg)
Macbook pro 2018 isn't the best at thermal handling in the first place.Few things she can do:.Clear up the back side of laptop. The vent is at the butt so give room for it to fart hot air. (Edit: just saw my laptop, actually idk if it flows thru the back with the hinge design lol. Also it has few little vents at the side).Get external fan.Check for dust buildup in the vent and fan.Check/replace thermal paste. 1 year shouldn't wear off yet but you can get more performant paste.Undervolt with intel XTU or throttlestop bit by bit (e.g.10 mv at a time).
Google yourself so you don't screw up but it's relatively safe if you do carefully. Worst case it will crash but you should be able to turn on the laptop again and fine tune until you find the sweet spot.Free up your cpu and kill background tasks.Check for system updates. Who knows if it's thermal throttled by windows (not sure about this)FYI some of these might void your warranty if any. In the beginning to she would get 100 fps and never crash (on the standard low settings 75% render scale). Then after some time she experienced a major drop in frames. The way you phrased that doesn't give a time frame to work with. Do you mean she gets 100 fps in the beginning of the day, and it slows down over the course of hours? Do you mean that she got 100 fps weeks or months ago, something changed more recently that makes the game perpetually slow now?
Consider what time frame brought the slowdown and then what might have changed in that system during that time frame. Heat and dust buildup, as suggested in another comment, is very common in laptops. Operating system configuration and driver updates can affect game performance, too.For what it's worth, 16GB is more than enough RAM for Overwatch. If you and your friend are technically inclined, you might want to keep your eyes on the. This could eventually lead to Overwatch being playable without Windows or Bootcamp. So, unfortunately, Overwatch through Bootcamp/in MacOS is not officially supported, so they're not likely to do much in the way of trying to fix it.An alternative might be to actually do a full secondary installation of Windows, and boot into that instead of MacOS.AlsoShe dedicated 70GB of memory to BootCamp and 180GB for the Mac.Is wrong. She dedicated 70GB of storage to BootCamp and 180GB for the Mac.Memory refers to the RAM in a computer, in this case, her total of 16GB of memory. Unfortunately I'm not sure here would be the best place for this question, as it's quite technical and can only be answered by a very small niche of users (the technically savvy that use MacOS lul). That said, I've seen plenty of users report that Overwatch plays fine over bootcamp, but most of these reports are from a year or so ago, so not very recent.
Would you happen to be able to check if a recent update to Windows, MacOS, or Overwatch caused these sudden compatibility issues? At least with Windows I know you can revert an update that potentially messed with the compatibility. As well, have you tried any generic troubleshooting such as reinstalling Overwatch or even Windows?.
